The Brief Biography of His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche

His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche (1920-2007) was a descendant of the Zhalu Kushang branch of the Che family. The lineage is said to have descended from the Clear Light Gods. The Chogye Trichens received many offerings from the Chinese emperors. One unique offering was the ceremonial hat, a copy of which Chogye Rinpoche is often seen wearing in photos. This hat is replete with symbolism of Vajrayana Buddhism in general and of the deity Hevajra in particular. The famous hat was named “he only ornament of the world” by the emperor. The bronze statue of Chogye Rinpoche which was molded by Venerable Guru Chokyi Gyetshen in 2017 is wearing the ceremonial hat.

His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, the Sakya throne holder, was the root Guru of the 14th Dalai Lama and the 41st Sakya Trizin, as well as the throne holder of Nyingma, Kagyu, and Gelug schools. Countless lamas and practitioners have received His precious teachings.

In 2007, His Eminence entered parinirvana, remaining in meditation for sixteen days, setting a record for post-death meditation. In Kathmandu, Nepal, where it had not snowed for sixty-two years, flower-shaped snowflakes fell, and circular rainbows appeared around the sun twice, which were the auspicious signs of realization mentioned in the scriptures.

Remarkably, after the cremation, His Eminence’s eyes, tongue, and heart were found intact, symbolizing the eternal achievements of body, speech, and mind. Numerous colored Buddha’s relics, including dark blue ones, were discovered, reflecting His Eminence's lifelong devotion to Vajrayogini and Mahakala practices.

For His Eminence’s widespread Buddha-work and profound influence on all sentient beings, He was honored by the Nepalese king Birendra with the title “Kukada Xin”, meaning “The Great Teacher of Western Nepal” as a great tribute to His Eminence for His contribution to Buddhism and all sentient beings. He was also the only Tibetan Lama to have received this supreme honor from the King of Nepal.

Each subsequent year, on the day commemorating the Buddha’s first turning of the Dharma wheel, the disciples at Guan Yin Shan hold a grand prayer ceremony. This celebrates the Buddha’s enlightenment under the Bodhi tree and His first turning of the Dharma wheel, where he taught the Four Noble Truths to the five monks, marking the beginning of the monastic community.

They also pray for Compassionate Guru Lung Du Yung Jing Rinpoche to continuously turn the Dharma wheel and bring widespread benefits to all sentient beings. Simultaneously, it serves as a reminder to the disciples at Guan Yin Shan to shoulder the responsibility of the Tathagata’s lineage, to propagate the sacred teachings of three vehicles –the Hinayana, the Mahayana, and the Vajrayana.
